More than 300 people who did the same were killed for trying to protect the trees.continue reading›› This so renowned chipko movement has been implemented more than once or twice at a different region of india and each time we got different chipko movement leaders. The famous ‘chipko movement’ was inspired by the true story of amrita devi bishnoi, who refused to let the king’s men cut trees in her village.

Sometimes it won moratoriums through government bans or court battles; The name of the movement comes from a word meaning “embrace”: Where the villagers hug the trees, saving them by interposing their bodies between them and the contractors’.

Sometimes it managed to replant trees in areas close to village homes. In 1970, a movement `chipko` was started in the hills of uttarakhand to save trees from falling. The ‘save thano‘ protesters also took their protest out of the forest to the jolly grant airport, for the authorities to hear them loud and clear.

Along with 84 villagers, they risked their lives to protect the forest trees from being cut down on the order of the king. The idea of chipko movement was of his wife and the action was taken by him. The hindi word chipko means “to hug” or “to cling to” and reflects the demonstrators’ primary tactic of embracing the trees to impede the loggers.

It not only has brought forth in a dramatic manner a greatly increased understanding of the divergent interests of local communities and state bureaucracies in the management of local resources; One such is the bishnoi community of rajasthan. The villagers, especially women of that region hugged the trees.

'chipko' movement was initiated from garhwal himalayas so as to save the tree from cutting. As an organized effort, the chipko movement has had some success. This was the strongest form of resistance against rampant cutting of trees, where people asserted their rights over.
